ISHR Belarus declares that the right to life must be respected for all despite differences in skin color: the life of a black person is as valuable as the life of a white person.
Statement by the Belarusian Section of the International Society for Human Rights on Racial Discrimination in the United States
Given that the enormous contribution to the protection of human rights by Martin Luther King, Jr., is highlighted in the proceedings of the republican seminar on the topic “Human Rights and Personality. The Role of the Individual in the Knowledge, Protection, and Realization of Human Rights” conducted by the organization in Brest in 2019, and some progress in the implementation of the rights of the African American minority made in the USA over the past decades, as well as recent events in Minneapolis related to the killing of George Floyd by the police, which showed that the problem of respecting the rights of the African American minority remains acute, the board of the Belarusian section of the ISHR cannot remain silent, especially since racial discrimination and racism are condemned in United Nations documents.
We declare that the right to life must be respected for all despite differences in skin color: the life of a black person is as valuable as the life of a white person.
- We show solidarity with those who condemned the actions of the police, saw the existing problem both in the USA and in France, Germany, Great Britain, and Australia.
- We express confidence that actions similar to those that took place in Minneapolis will never be repeated.
- We understand that it is necessary to step up efforts to overcome racial discrimination, wherever it occurs, to form public opinion condemning racism.
The Belarusian section of the ISHR remains faithful to the principles of peaceful resolution of emerging conflicts in the spirit of tolerance, humanity, and respect for human rights for all people.
