Dmitry Muratov declared a foreign agent

In early September 2023, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation declared Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov a foreign agent.

Later, Dmitry Muratov announced that he leaves his post as editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta for the duration of the court proceedings regarding the inclusion of his name in the register of foreign agents. Muratov himself strongly disagreed with the decision of the Ministry of Justice. Sergei Sokolov, Muratov’s deputy, was appointed acting editor-in-chief.

Dmitry Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. He shared the prize with the journalist Maria Ressa. In 2022, following the outbreak of Russia’s war in Ukraine, he sold his medal at auction and donated the money to UNICEF to help Ukrainian refugees.
