Radio Svobody journalist died in Kiev

Journalist Vera Hyrych died on April 28 as a result of missile attack by the Russian armed forces in Kiev. Her body was found under the rubble of an apartment building on April 29.

The missile attack on Kiev took place during the visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Ukrainian capital on April 28. During his visit, Guterres met President Volodymyr Zelensky and discussed in particular the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the missile attack on the capital:

Immediately after our negotiations in Kiev, Russian missiles flew into the city. Five missiles. And that says a lot about Russia’s real attitude towards global institutions, about the Russian leadership’s attempts to humiliate the UN and everything the organisation embodies, and it demands a powerful response accordingly.

Vera Hyrych has been working for the Ukrainian Radio Svobody since 2018, before that the journalist worked with leading Ukrainian TV channels and did community work.

Radio Svobody editorial board extended its condolences to Vera Hyrych’s family and said that colleagues would remember her as a kind and bright person, a true professional.
