The IGFM is shocked by the death of Alexei Navalny and expresses its sincere condolences. The death of the Kremlin critic makes it clear how dangerous today’s Russia is for opposition activists and journalists, but also for its neighbours.

Frankfurt am Main, 16 February 2024 – The International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) was deeply shocked to learn today of the death of Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny. “We hereby express our sincere condolences to his wife Yulia Navalny, his two children, his parents, his friends and his colleagues,” the human rights organisation said.
At the same time, we join the worldwide community of mourners who share not only the horror at the death of a courageous and generous person, but also at the inhumanity of a dictatorial regime.
According to the information available to the IGFM, Alexei Navalny, who was born on 4 June 1976, died in the “Polar Wolf” penal colony in the Kharp settlement. The IGFM is deeply saddened by the depressing report of his death. According to what is known, Alexei Navalny was sent to a penal isolation centre 27 times during his detention and spent a total of 308 days in prison.
State murder machinery
It was a murder in instalments. It makes it clear how ruthlessly Putin’s regime treats members of the opposition, journalists and dissidents. But it also makes clear how dangerous today’s Russia is for its neighbours. This is clearly evident in statements by the Russian leadership: “Russia’s borders end nowhere”. In concrete terms, this is expressed in the daily terror of Russian bombs and missiles, which mean suffering and death for millions of peaceful Ukrainians, warns the IGFM. Chechnya, Georgia and, since 2014, Ukraine are evidence of a fascist imperialism that threatens the whole of Europe.
After decades of dependence on Russia, Armenia’s very existence is now also under threat. Now that the Armenian leadership has turned its back on its historical “patron of peace” Russia, Christian Armenia is at risk of being crushed between Russia and the Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance, warns the International Federation for Peace and Humanitarian Mission in Armenia (IGFM).
