Federal Government Human Rights Commissioner shocked

On the occasion of a report by the United Nations High Commissioner in Kiev on allegations of torture in eastern Ukraine, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, Bärbel Kofler, said today (March 19):

“I am shocked by the findings of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that prisoners are systematically tortured in the so-called” Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. “I strongly condemn this practice, the allegations must be clarified urgently and comprehensively.

Russia must exert its influence over the separatists in eastern Ukraine for the conflict to end. Fundamental human rights for local people must be guaranteed, international humanitarian law must be respected.
