Prosecutors in the Republic of Moldova declare donations from relatives or friends to the LE in order to legitimise illegal income. This is evidenced by research data.

It notes that the number of prosecutors who declare donations is increasing. Mostly, they cite a gift received at a wedding, christening or in the form of a transfer as the source of money received.

For example, between 2018 and 2019, around 11% of prosecutors who filed declarations said they had received cash gifts. In 2020, this figure rose to 15 per cent – that is, we are talking about one in seven prosecutors.

The number of donations per prosecutor is also increasing – from 1.4 gifts in 2018 to 1.7 in 2020. The amount of donations is also increasing: 7 million lei in 2018, 8.6 million lei in 2019 and 9.8 million lei in 2020.

The study analysed data from the annual reports of about 600 prosecutors from 2018 to 2020.
