12 more children returned to Ukraine from occupied territories
This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for human rights Dmytro Lubinets.
“It was possible to return 12 Ukrainian children to their homeland! Children together with their relatives lived – in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions. Fortunately, now they are already in Ukrainian-controlled territory. Each family experienced in its own way the mess created by the occupation ‘authorities’,” Lubinets wrote in his Telegram channel, publishing photos of the families:
Earlier, the US-based Conflict Observatory team released a report saying that the Russian authorities had taken at least 6,000 children from Ukraine to Russia and Crimea and were engaged in their “re-education”.
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s children’s rights ombudsperson, on suspicion of illegally deporting Ukrainian children.
In an interview, Lvova-Belova herself said that she did not consider herself a war criminal and that the children were taken out from under shelling, so these actions should be called evacuation rather than deportation: “Under the Geneva Convention, we can evacuate children from areas where their life or health is in danger.
