On 5 September, Elena Liptser, a well-known Moscow lawyer and friend of Novaya Gazeta, passed away after a long illness. Lena was only 58 years old, and she had been having a particularly hard time lately: her son, lawyer Alexei Liptser, was in prison, and she was anxious to wait for him.

Alexei was sentenced to five years as a lawyer who defended Alexei Navalny (albeit for a very short time), and defended him before the politician was recognised as an “extremist”.

Alexey Liptser learned about the death of his mum in the Vladimir pre-trial detention centre, where he is awaiting an appeal. And, of course, he really wants to say goodbye to the dearest person.

We ask you for mercy, we ask you to help Alexey Liptser to be released to the farewell ceremony, which will take place on 11 September in the ritual hall of Nikolo-Arkhangelsk cemetery at 13 o’clock.

We appeal to Tatyana Nikolayevna Moskalkova, Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, because, according to Russian law, every Russian citizen, even a convicted person, has the exclusive right to say goodbye to his or her deceased relatives.

We appeal to Sergey Konstantinovich Shishkin, chairman of the Vladimir Regional Court, which is the court where the appeal against Alexey Liptser’s sentence is being considered. Alexey Liptser’s defence has already filed a corresponding petition to the Vladimir Regional Court.

We ask for mercy: help your son to say goodbye to his mum!
