It is not known exactly what Ponomarev is accused of. The contact number listed on the wanted notice is that of the duty office of the Moscow City Police Department for the North-Western District.

In late 2020, Lev Ponomarev was designated a ‘foreign agent’. In the autumn of 2023, the human rights activist was fined under protocols for breaching the requirements for ‘foreign agents’. In 2025, two organisations with which Ponomarev was associated – ‘Peace. Progress. Human Rights’ and the ‘Andrei Sakharov Institute’ – appeared on the Russian register of ‘undesirable’ organisations.
