Information about the ISHR Ukrainian Section

On December 10, 1993, 25 Ukrainian human rights defenders, mostly they were former Soviet civil rights activists, founded the Ukrainian Section of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR Ukrainian Section). Today the Ukrainian Section has 3,500 registered members in all regions of Ukraine, most of whom have formed working groups.

ISHR-Ukraine promotes and supports measures and efforts aimed at the recognition and implementation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights of December 10, 1948. ISHR-Ukraine’s main principle is to support only those individuals and associations that do not use weapon or other means of violence in their struggle for human rights. ISHR does not support individuals and associations that advocate a totalitarian form of government or call for the use of violence.

Since its foundation, the organization has, on the one hand, provided individual legal assistance and, on the other hand, monitored trials, promoted the rule of law, as well as educated universities and colleges and influenced the enforcement of sentences in accordance with human rights and the humanization of the system as a whole. It promotes practical steps towards solving the problem of “street children” and has been providing humanitarian assistance to children in need since its foundation. Since 2022, IAC-ISHR, the section’s working group, which consists exclusively of lawyers and law interns, has been providing humanitarian help to refugees and other victims of the Russian armed invasion to Ukraine in the field of WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) cluster under the mandate of the UN Refugee Agency.
