We debunk some examples and show how to see through the deception.<\/p>\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-invasion-of-ukraine\/t-60931789\">Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on\u00a0February 24<\/a>, an information war has been raging online. This battle for the truth is being fought on many levels.\u00a0DW&#8217;s fact-checking team has compiled some of the false claims and propaganda\u00a0from both sides, revealing what is behind them.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: This article is continuously being\u00a0updated.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Jubilant videos of military success<\/h2>\n<div class=\"picBox full\nrechts\n\"><a class=\"overlayLink init\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/fact-check-fake-news-thrives-amid-russia-ukraine-war\/a-61477502#\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screenshot Twitter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/61452532_401.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot Twitter\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/> <\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>Claim:<\/strong> An unofficial Twitter page\u00a0with more than 450,000 followers supporting the armed forces of Ukraine\u00a0(@ArmedForcesUkr) <a class=\"icon external\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220412140256\/https:\/twitter.com\/ArmedForcesUkr\/status\/1512843893016088583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted a short video<\/a>\u00a0allegedly showing Ukrainian military successes against the Russian army.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DW fact check:<\/strong> Misleading<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/fact-check-how-to-spot-a-fake-military-success-story-in-russia-ukraine-war\/a-61453500\">DW has established<\/a> that six of the incidents in the film predate the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war and show conflicts in other regions. One of those scenes actually shows Russian snipers at work in Syria. The remaining 10 incidents might be legitimate, but cannot be 100% verified.<\/p>\n<h2>Solidarity among firefighters<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Claim:<\/strong> A CNN reporter reports live from a fuel depot near Lviv that is on fire after a Russian missile attack. <a class=\"icon external\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220328054951\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoostBroekers\/status\/1508320275544297476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Some viewers have claimed<\/a>\u00a0the pictures are fake. One firefighter is wearing a jacket with the word &#8220;Edmonton&#8221; on it. They are, therefore, not pictures from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col2\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xLVH0dUv72M?wmode=transparent\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>DW fact check:<\/strong> False<\/p>\n<p>In <a class=\"icon intern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine-war-how-to-spot-the-propaganda-and-fakes-designed-to-manipulate-us\/av-61408681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our Ukraine fact-checking video<\/a> we proved that the pictures are authentic. In 2017, <a class=\"icon external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/edmonton-firefighters-deliver-gear-ukraine-1.4346267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Edmonton Fire Department donated<\/a> 600 fire suits and other equipment to Ukraine. Analyses by other media have reached the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<h2>Russia bombing cities in Ukraine<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Claim:<\/strong>\u00a0<a class=\"icon external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iameurmishvili\/status\/1504416003396194308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia&#8217;s Foreign Ministry, has said<\/a> that Russia is not bombing cities in Ukraine. She has alleged\u00a0that pictures showing the attacks\u00a0are manipulated videos from NATO countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DW fact check:<\/strong>\u00a0False<\/p>\n<p>Russian attacks on civilians and non-military targets in Ukraine have been well documented. Highly complex computer programs (machine learning) are used to generate video and sound from other sources to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/fact-check-how-do-i-spot-a-deepfake\/a-60029650\">create an almost convincing impression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Zelenskyy&#8217;s whereabouts<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Claim:<\/strong>\u00a0Two days after the Russian invasion began in late February, \u00a0<a class=\"icon external\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220226143907\/https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1411855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Russian State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Zelenskyy had fled the capital, Kyiv. The claim was repeated many times by internet users.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DW fact check:<\/strong>\u00a0False<\/p>\n<p>There are countless instances of people claiming that the Ukrainian president has left Kyiv. Our <a class=\"icon intern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine-war-how-to-spot-the-propaganda-and-fakes-designed-to-manipulate-us\/av-61408681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact-check video shows<\/a> verifiable evidence that Zelenskyy has remained based in Kyiv throughout the war.<\/p>\n<h2>Old explosion footage passed off as new<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Claim:<\/strong>\u00a0In her video, a <a class=\"icon external\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220411153604\/https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@rellybella\/video\/7073876273440853253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TikToker shows<\/a> a huge explosion that allegedly occurred in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The same video is shared on Facebook, this time supposedly showing the bombing of the &#8220;Ukrainian headquarters,&#8221; as stated in the video.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DW fact check:<\/strong> False<\/p>\n<p>The footage comes from Lebanon and shows the huge explosion in the port of Beirut in August 2020, as we showed\u00a0<a class=\"icon intern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine-war-how-to-spot-the-propaganda-and-fakes-designed-to-manipulate-us\/av-61408681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in our Ukraine fact-checking video<\/a>.
