GEORGIA

Overview

Georgia (Georgian: „საქართველო“, pronounced “Sakartvelo”) is a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. It borders Russia, Armenia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Georgia’s population is near 4,000,000, with a land area of 69,700 square kilometers. Georgia is a country with fertile orchards, sunny coastal regions, mountains, mesmerizing valleys with its comfortable climate.
The capital of Georgia is Tbilisi, and its official language is Georgian. Georgian belongs to its own ancient linguistic group unlike any other language spoken outside the region. Georgian is one of only 17 original languages with its own 33-letter alphabet. 84% of Georgians are Orthodox Christians, with Christianity becoming the official religion in the fourth century. The Georgian Lari (GEL) is its currency.
Wine making is an ancient tradition in Georgia; it is one of the oldest wine producing regions of the world, beginning around 5,000 B.C. Georgian music and dance covers a wide range of genres, and its folk music is estimated by some to be more than 1,500 years old. In 2001, UNESCO recognized Georgian songs as a masterpiece of oral immaterial heritage. The national performing style and traditions were passed down from generation to generation, and the traditional costumes were formed by the influence of nature and way of life in Georgia.

ISHR Georgia Section

The Georgia Section of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) is a nongovernmental and noncommercial organization for the protection of human rights. The Section was formed on the basis of a national human rights team created in 1990, which became a part of the ISHR on December 6, 1998 at the 22nd annual meeting of the International Council of the ISHR. The section has over one hundred individual members and associate organizations.
The Georgian section performs permanent monitoring of human rights and freedoms, not only in Georgia but also in the broader Caucasus region. An additional goal is identifying, analyzing, publishing and spreading information about violations of human rights.
It maintains permanent monitoring process through wide communities of international and local non-governmental organizations, democratic mass media outlets and governments about the conflicts and their causes in Georgia and in the Caucasus region. It prioritizes defending the interests of prisoners (especially political and prisoners of conscience), refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs), orphans and homeless children and socially underprivileged people.
The section organizes humanitarian aid for prisoners, refugees and IDPs, homeless children, physically disabled and socially underprivileged families. Additionally, it leads educational and research efforts, to prepare and publish academic literature in the sphere of human rights.
The Georgian national section of the ISHR has performed its international monitoring mission during every Georgian election since 1998.
