From Myanmar to Mexico, journalists continue to risk their lives to deliver the news.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian government has taken complete control of news and information to manage the public&#8217;s view of the country&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Tuesday as it published the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-the-tug-of-war-over-press-freedom\/a-61659841\">World Press Freedom Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris-based campaign group said Russian President Vladimir Putin had\u00a0established extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/how-to-circumvent-state-internet-censorship-in-russia\/a-61054476\">wartime censorship<\/a> at a level not seen since the Soviet Union,\u00a0launching\u00a0a massive disinformation campaign to justify the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Russia, which was previously ranked just 150 out of 180 countries as a result of a decadelong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-fewer-independent-media-outlets-every-day\/a-61004083\">crackdown on independent media<\/a>, has fallen a further five places in the latest index to 155, below Zimbabwe, Sudan and Libya.<\/p>\n<h2>Reporters killed covering Ukraine war<\/h2>\n<p>At least 20 journalists and media workers have died or been injured since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russias-invasion-of-ukraine\/t-60931789\">Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine<\/a> on February 24, <a class=\"icon external\" href=\"https:\/\/nsju.org\/novini\/naczionalna-spilka-zhurnalistiv-diznalasya-imena-20-vbytyh-na-vijni-medijnykiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"picBox full\nrechts\n\"><a class=\"overlayLink init\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russian-war-censorship-denounced-on-world-press-freedom-day\/a-61638402#\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"A man looks at a computer screen watching a dissenting Russian Channel One employee\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/61129123_401.jpg\" alt=\"A man looks at a computer screen watching a dissenting Russian Channel One employee\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/> <\/a>Journalist Marina Ovsyannikova (right) burst into a live broadcast in March to condemn Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Putin&#8217;s clampdown on non-compliant media and journalists began\u00a0before the war. Since 2017, about 90 media outlets and individuals have been labeled &#8220;foreign agents&#8221;\u00a0and forced to shut down and\/or flee the country.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters Without Borders said the Kremlin&#8217;s influence stretches to the media in neighboring former-Soviet countries, like Belarus, which is ranked\u00a0153rd in the Press Freedom Index. A growing number of Belarusian media outlets have been labeled &#8220;extremist,&#8221;\u00a0which means that reading and sharing their content on social networks is subject to criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Following his disputed election win in 2020, Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko was denounced internationally after he ordered a plane carrying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/belarus-plane-hijack-journalist-moved-to-house-arrest\/a-58042460\">exiled opposition journalist Raman Pratasevich<\/a> to be diverted to Minsk last May. More than 20 media workers are currently in prison in Belarus.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, the World Press Freedom Index reveals the dangers that journalists and many media outlets face in reporting on world events, in the face of increasing authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<h2>Hong Kong sees steepest drop in index<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/teaching-journalism-now-a-risky-affair-in-hong-kong\/a-60576639\">Hong Kong<\/a>, for example, registered the steepest drop in the ranking, falling 68 places to 148th, as Beijing continues to extend its information control over the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.
