Do you still remember your 18th birthday? For many young people, this birthday is a moment of new beginnings\u2014the end of youth and the start of adulthood. For Arseniy Turbin, however, this day means something completely different: today he turns 18, and he is spending his birthday behind bars for the third year in a row.<\/div>\n
Arseniy was just 15 years old when he was arrested in 2023. His \u201ccrime\u201d: he had distributed leaflets in his neighborhood questioning the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin.<\/div>\n
The Russian authorities interpreted this as \u201cparticipation in extremist organizations.\u201d Criminal proceedings, interrogations, house arrest, and a 24-day inpatient psychiatric commitment followed. In June 2024, Arseniy was sentenced to five years in prison.<\/div>\n
\u201cMom, I think I\u2019m going to die soon\u201d<\/b><\/div>\n
Unfortunately, the repression did not end with the verdict. During his pre-trial detention, Arseniy was repeatedly attacked by a cellmate and lost 17 kilograms. According to his mother, Irina, his growth also came to a standstill during his first months in prison.<\/div>\n
During a visit from his mother on September 11, 2024, Arseniy said to her: \u201cMom, I beg you, do everything you can, please get me out of here, I\u2019m doing very, very badly here. Mom, I think I\u2019m going to die soon.\u201d<\/div>\n
In December 2024, Arseniy was transferred to a juvenile penal colony in the Perm region\u2014around 1,500 kilometers away from his home. His mother subsequently moved near the penal colony to be closer to her son. The IGFM was able to accompany and provide psychological support to her.<\/div>\n
The persecution continues<\/b><\/div>\n
Normally, Arseniy should have been released after serving his sentence. However, at the beginning of 2026, another criminal case was added: he is accused of participating in \u201cmass riots\u201d at his detention facility. In February, he was therefore transferred from the juvenile penal colony to a remand prison in Perm. Such new proceedings are used by the Russian system to extend the original imprisonment.<\/div>\n

Sentenced to silence<\/b><\/div>\n
Arseniy\u2019s case is unfortunately not an isolated one in today\u2019s Russia. For many Russian youths, political repression and the fear of persecution have now become part of everyday life.<\/div>\n
According to current IGFM findings, more than 120 minors and young people up to the age of 23 are being criminally prosecuted for political reasons. The actual figure is likely significantly higher.<\/div>\n
They have been sentenced to long prison terms or forced commitment to psychiatric facilities. An entire generation in Putin\u2019s Russia is systematically being robbed of their youth and contact with their families.<\/div>\n
