{"id":38278,"date":"2023-03-28T09:26:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T07:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/gosudarstvennyj-departament-ssha-ukazal-na-problemy-s-soblyudeniem-prav-cheloveka-v-moldove\/"},"modified":"2023-03-28T09:36:56","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T07:36:56","slug":"us-state-department-points-out-human-rights-problems-in-moldova-in-its-2022-annual-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/az\/us-state-department-points-out-human-rights-problems-in-moldova-in-its-2022-annual-report\/","title":{"rendered":"US State Department points out human rights problems in Moldova in its 2022 annual report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"sc-1evpin9-1 gEsNIp\">US State Department criticises Moldova for human rights abuses<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38276 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-31x21.jpg 31w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/protest.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The document identifies problems such as: &#8220;reports of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment by the authorities&#8221;, &#8220;unsuitable and life-threatening conditions in prisons&#8221;, &#8220;serious problems with the independence of courts&#8221;, &#8220;acts of corruption in state bodies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The following problems with the observance of human rights in Moldova are listed in the published report:<\/p>\n<p>Reports of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment by the authorities;<br \/>\nunsuitable and life-threatening conditions in prisons;<br \/>\nserious problems with the independence of the courts;<br \/>\nacts of corruption within state institutions;<br \/>\nlack of investigation and prosecution of gender-based violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence;<br \/>\ncrimes of violence or threats of violence against Roma;<br \/>\nAnti-Semitic crimes, violence and threats of violence;<br \/>\nCrimes of violence or threat of violence against LGBT+ persons;<br \/>\ncrimes involving violence or threats of violence against persons with disabilities;<br \/>\nthe existence of the worst forms of child labour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. State Department pointed out human rights problems in Transnistria in the report as well:<\/p>\n<p>disappearance of people;<br \/>\ntorture and cases of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment by the &#8220;authorities&#8221;;<br \/>\nlife-threatening prison conditions;<br \/>\narbitrary arrests or detentions;<br \/>\nthe presence of political prisoners or detainees;<br \/>\nserious problems with the independence of the &#8220;judiciary&#8221;;<br \/>\narbitrary or unlawful interference with privacy;<br \/>\nfailure to prosecute domestic and sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the report also noted:<\/p>\n<p>Severe restrictions on freedom of speech and media activities;<br \/>\nThe existence of &#8220;laws&#8221; criminalising libel;<br \/>\nsevere restrictions on internet freedom;<br \/>\nSignificant interference with freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association, including overly restrictive &#8220;laws&#8221; on the organisation, funding or operation of non-governmental and civil society organisations<br \/>\nserious restrictions on freedom of movement;<br \/>\nserious and unwarranted restrictions on political participation;<br \/>\nserious &#8220;state&#8221; corruption;<br \/>\nserious &#8220;state&#8221; restrictions or harassment of national and international human rights organisations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the authorities investigated reports of human rights violations and corruption by officials, the process was slow and arduous. During the year, the authorities (competent authorities &#8211; &#8220;I.&#8221;) indicted and detained several former high-ranking officials, including former President Igor Dodon, former MP Vladimir Andronachi, Shor MP Marina Tauber and former Director of Railways of Moldova Anatol Topale.
