That is why this case is unique and today\u2019s response is obvious and self-explanatory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that a Member State has had its membership of the <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"United Nations Human Rights Council\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Council<\/a> suspended. Libya lost its seat in 2011, following repression of protests by ruler Muammar Gaddafi, who was later overthrown.<\/p>\n<p>Gennady Kuzmin, Deputy Russian ambassador, in remarks before the vote, called for countries to \u201cvote against the attempt by Western countries and their allies to destroy the existing human rights architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Parallels with Rwanda<\/h2>\n<p>The vote took place on the anniversary of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and the Ukrainian ambassador drew parallels with this dark page in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe genocide in Rwanda was largely due to the indifference of the world\u2019s community, when the UN did not respond to warnings in the UN <a class=\"word-link\" title=\"United Nations Security Council\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/securitycouncil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Security Council<\/a> and in the General Assembly, a year before the tragedy that we commemorate exactly on this day,\u201d said Mr. Kyslytsya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, in the case of Ukraine, it is not even a year, because the tragedy is unfolding right now before our eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe  id=\"_ytid_59093\"  width=\"2000\" height=\"1125\"  data-origwidth=\"2000\" data-origheight=\"1125\"  data-relstop=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YbJ5zxwLi80?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;disablekb=0&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"adzone-outstream\" class=\"advertising advertising--no-label js-adzone outstream\" data-ad-name=\"adzone-outstream\" data-ad-id=\"adzone-outstream\"><\/div>\n<h2>Grounds for suspension<\/h2>\n<p>The UN Human Rights Council consists of 47 members and is based in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Russia joined the body in January 2021 as one of 15 countries elected by the General Assembly to serve three-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>Under the 2006 resolution that established the Council, the General Assembly can suspend a country from membership if it commits gross and systematic violations of human rights.<\/p>\n<h2>Russia quits Council<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking after the adoption of the resolution, Deputy Permanent Representative Kuzmin, suddenly stated that Russia had already decided that day, to leave the Council before the end of its term.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed the Council was monopolized by a group of States who use it for their short-term aims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese States for many years have directly been involved in blatant and massive violations of human rights, or abetted those violations,\u201d he said, speaking through an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn spite of their membership as members of the Council, they are not ready to sacrifice their short-term political and economic interests in favour of true cooperation and stabilizing the human rights situation in certain countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/04\/1115782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">un.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN General Assembly votes to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council &nbsp; The resolution received a two-thirds majority of those voting, minus abstentions, in the 193-member Assembly, with 93 nations voting in favour and 24 against.
