{"id":32213,"date":"2022-01-18T09:40:10","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T08:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/evrosojuz-vnov-prizval-osvobodit-alekseja-navalnogo\/"},"modified":"2022-01-18T09:44:56","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T08:44:56","slug":"the-european-union-again-called-for-the-release-of-alexei-navalny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/az\/the-european-union-again-called-for-the-release-of-alexei-navalny\/","title":{"rendered":"The European Union again called for the release of Alexei Navalny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">After spending a year behind bars, the prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny posted a message on social media telling his followers: &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid of anything.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"ru\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\">The European Union again called for the release of Alexei Navalny<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32211 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"393\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii-31x17.jpg 31w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii-355x200.jpg 355w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/humanrights-online.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/navalinii.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a year since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/alexei-navalny-detained-after-landing-in-moscow\/a-56252905\">Alexei Navalny was arrested<\/a> by authorities at Moscow International Airport and sentenced to two and a half years in a prison camp for allegedly violating parole conditions on fraud charges.<\/p>\n<p>The fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin had arrived from Germany, where he was recovering at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/alexei-navalny-leaves-hospital-in-berlin\/a-55022689\">Berlin hospital from nerve agent poisoning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His return and arrest led to protests and\u00a0a monthslong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-labels-more-top-alexei-navalny-aides-terrorists\/a-60428081\">crackdown on his political network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Navalny on Monday took to social media to share his sentiments on the anniversary of his arrest on charges he has maintained are politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t regret it for a second,&#8221; Navalny said of his decision to return to Russia, only to be arrested.<\/p>\n<h2>Navalny says people must be &#8216;courageous&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Taking stock after a year behind bars, with the possibility of more being added with ongoing cases against him, Navalny said people should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-more-than-5000-arrested-as-alexei-navalny-supporters-defy-protest-ban-says-monitor\/a-56394521\">not let fear govern them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having served my first year in prison, I want to tell everyone exactly what I shouted to those gathered outside the court when a convoy led me to a police van: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-protests-erupt-over-navalny-prison-sentencing\/a-56434780\">Don&#8217;t be afraid of anything,&#8221;<\/a> Navalny added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is our country and we have no other,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin critic also said that he had read about employees of the Internal Affairs Ministry being &#8220;kicked out of office for liking my posts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why live your whole life in fear, and even to be robbed, if you can arrange everything differently \u2014 more fairly,&#8221; Navalny said.<\/p>\n<p>His spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said she regarded January 17 as a &#8220;triumphant&#8221;\u00a0moment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me personally, January 17 is the day of victory and the day of absolute triumph. Putin thought that he would kill Navalny. &#8230; Alexey overcame everything and came home \u2014 alive, unharmed and even stronger than he was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"picBox full\">\n<div id=\"twtr-1483013796578922501\" class=\"group embeddedTweet\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Continued imprisonment condemned<\/h2>\n<p>Russia has been criticized and condemned by global rights groups not only for Navalny&#8217;s arrest, but for the ensuing\u00a0clampdown on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-puts-navalnys-ally-lyubov-sobol-on-wanted-list\/a-59570904\">political opponents.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moscow has also been accused being behind\u00a0the\u00a0poisoning of Navalny, something the Kremlin denies.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s human rights commissioner, the Green Party&#8217;s Luise Amtsberg, called for Navalny&#8217;s\u00a0immediate release. &#8220;His conviction was arbitrary and glaringly disproportionate,&#8221; Amtsberg said.<\/p>\n<p>International rights group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/amnesty-strips-navalny-of-prisoner-of-conscience-status\/a-56674628\">Amnesty International<\/a> called for Navalny&#8217;s &#8220;immediate release and for the end of brutal reprisals against his supporters,&#8221; in a post on Twitter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"picBox full\">\n<div id=\"twtr-1483058151045971972\" class=\"group embeddedTweet\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Russian authorities have stepped up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/russia-detains-alexei-navalny-allies-after-raids\/a-56370018\">measures against opposition figures<\/a> and those with links to Navalny.<\/p>\n<p>His political network has been banned and deemed &#8220;extremist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The anti-government critic and his allies were charged in September with setting up an extremist group.
