The EU has extended until December 8, 2022 the so-called “European Magnitsky Act”, which includes sanctions for violations of human rights in Russia and a number of other countries.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Council today adopted a decision prolonging the sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for serious human rights violations and abuses in various countries worldwide<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The Council today adopted a decision prolonging the sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for serious human rights violations and abuses in various countries worldwide<\/strong> for one year, until 8 December 2022<\/strong>. Therefore sanctions will continue to apply to all individuals and entities listed so far with the exception of one deceased person, bringing the list to a total of fourteen individuals<\/strong> and four entities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today’s decision confirms the EU’s commitment to denounce human rights violations and abuses wherever they occur, making use of all instruments, while reasserting that human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated.<\/p>\n

The EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime<\/strong>, established on 7 December 2020, enables the EU to target individuals, entities and bodies \u2013 including state and non-state actors \u2013 responsible for, involved in or associated with serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide. It provides for a travel ban<\/strong> for individuals and the freezing of funds<\/strong> applying to both individuals and entities. In addition, persons and entities in the EU are being forbidden from making funds available<\/strong> to those listed, either directly or indirectly.<\/p>\n
